I used to be like you... a long time ago. All brand new and perfect. No mistakes, no regrets. People look at you and think of how wonderful your future will be. They want you to be something special... like a doctor or a lawyer. I hate to tell you this, but if you grow up here, you're more likely to wind up selling your bodies on the streets, or shooting dope from dirty needles in a bus stop. And if you're successful, you'll make money selling junk to crackheads. And don't think twice about killing someone's wife, because you won't even know it's wrong in the first place. Maybe... you'll end up like me... A hobo with a shotgun! I hope you can do better.
~ The Hobo's words to newborn babies in a hospital.

The Hobo (whose true name is never mentionned) his the main protagonist of the Grindhouse movie Hobo with a shotgun.

He was portrayed by the late Rutger Hauer.

History[]

All through the movie, he is depicted as a very lonely and hurt old man, being rejected by a cruel society that doesn't want him. He starts killing all the dangerous thugs that terrorizes the town, with no mercy. Yet, he has a strong sense of right and wrong, and wants nothing more than justice. He is also shown to like children, believing that they are the future and can make the world better. This is proved through his paternal love for Abby, whom he wishes to get out of prostitution and become a teacher. It is unknown if he ever had children and a wife himself.

The Hobo arrives in Hope town (tagged Scum town) and witnesses the violence and the corruption filling the perverted place. He saves a good-hearted hooker, Abby, from Slick, the psychopathic son of the town's ruler with crime against humanity. When the Hobo tries to get Slick to justice, it is revealed that the cops also work for the Drake. The Hobo is beaten, and has "Scum" scarred on his chest, before getting thrown out. Abby lets the Hobo sleep at her place to thank him for saving her. They become friends, and develop a father-daughter love.

The Hobo earns money through playing in a tape for a sadistic cameraman, who forces him to chew glass. The Hobo plans to by a lawn mower to start a small business and stop leaving in the streets. But instead, faced again by the incredible violence the town goes through, the Hobo buys a shotgun. He starts killing off all the murderers, rapists and abusers he meets, delivering justice one shell at the time.

His actions gives him fame, and get to the Drake, who orders his sons to get him. The Hobo keeps fighting, while trying to protect Abby who get attacked for being his only true friend. He kills Slick and takes her to an hospital.

The Drake sends the Plague, who captures the Hobo. Thanks to Abby, he is freed, before his execution. He kills the Drake, but is shot by the police as the results. However, his efforts paid: the town avenges him by shooting the corrupted cops, finally ending the Drake's influence and his crime against humanity on the town.
